Abstract

On February 20th, 1995, Dave Davis of this office conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of an area slated for the proposed construction of a roadway, parking lot and walkways at Camp Rutledge in Hard Labor Creek State Park, Morgan County, Georgia (see attached map). He was assisted in locating the project area by Park Manager Bruce Roper. The purpose of the survey was to assess any cultural resources which might be impacted by the proposed development. Vegetation recorded in the vicinity of Camp Rutledge included mature pines and oaks. A few scattered immature cedar trees were also noted. A surface inspection of the area was conducted with emphasis on eroded areas, the bases of trees, and in the existing dirt roads. Shovel tests, measuring 40 centimeters wide and dug to subsoil, were placed in two locations within the project area.
