Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted an intensive survey of a 4.09 ha (10.12 ac) tract proposed by Oglethorpe Power Corporation for the Cay Creek Substation and 46 KV transmission line to be located on the south side of U.S. Highway 82 in Midway, Liberty County, Georgia. The survey included a historical review, surface reconnaissance and the placing of 53 shovel tests at 20 or 25 m intervals across the entire project area. Although a great deal of colonial history can be attributed to the Midway District, there apparently was never much development at Midway itself. The field survey produced no archeological sites older than 50 years. No prehistoric artifacts were found. There were no standing structures, other than a modern temporary storage shed, nor were there any remains of earlier structures evident. Evidence of modern dumping was apparent on the surface. Five of the shovel tests produced a total of 14 historic artifacts dating to the middle two quarters of the twentieth century.
