Abstract

Project GIP-341(27) proposes to would widen US 341 from the Wayne/Glynn County line to CR 432. Existing right-of-way varies from 100 to 200 feet; an additional 34 to 84 feet of right-of-way would be required. Total project length is approximately 2.98 miles. Project BRF-008-1(49) would replace the existing bridges at Clay Hole Creek and Everett Creek and would remove the overpass bridge and approaches at the abandoned CSX Railroad. Project GIP-341(28) proposes to widen US 341 from CR 432 to SR 99 in Sterling for a total distance of 8.2 miles. Existing right-of-way varies from 100 to 200 feet; additional required right-of-way would vary from 0 to 84 feet. Project BRF-008-1(50) would replace the existing bridges at Little Clay Hole Creek and Little Cowpen Creek. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed projects'- corridors was conducted for the entire length of the projects. The archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed corridors as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the projects will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the projects conform to that described above.
