Abstract

The proposed project would replace the existing parallel northbound and southbound bridges located on Interstate 95 over the South Altamaha River and would reconstruct the approaches to these bridges. The total project length, including the bridges and approaches, is approximately 2.8 kilometers. The two existing 538.1 x 12.0 meter bridges would be replaced with two new parallel bridges each approximately 544.2 meters long and 24.2 meters wide. The approaches to these bridges would be widened to accommodate the new bridges and eventual widening proposed for the entire 1-95 corridor beginning at a point approximately 1.3 kilometers south of the bridges and ending at a point approximately 1.5 kilometers north of the bridges. Under this project the approaches would be widened to a width sufficient to provide three 3.6 meter lanes in each direction with a 15.9 meter median and 3.6 meter outside shoulders. All construction would be accomplished within existing right-of-way, however, a 146.3 meter long x 3.0 meter wide easement may be required for the installation of erosion control devices. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor.
