Abstract

The proposed project would construct 4 170.7 m x 9.7 m (560 ft x 32 ft) concrete bridge structure on existinq alignment on SR. 187 at Suwannoochee Creek in Echols-Clinch Counties. The existing right-of-way is 30.5 m (100 ft) also, an on-site detour will be constructed on the south (downstream) side of the existing bridge with required right-of-way varying from 7.6 m to 22.8 m x 178.8 m (25 ft to 75 ft x 586.6 ft) on the south side. The temporary construction easement is 281.9 m x 10.7 m (924.88 ft x 35 ft) on the south (downstream) side. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project's rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 281.9 m (924.88 ft) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
