Abstract

Originally, the proposed project consisted of the addition of left and right turn lanes on the eastbound and westbound approaches of Oglesby and Hill Roads to SR 6/US 278 in Cobb County. The existing traffic signal at Brownsville Road was to be upgraded. Existing right-of-way at both Oglesby and Hill Road is approximately 12.2. m (40 ft). Additional required right-of-way would vary to a maximum of approximately 13.7 m (45 ft). No additional right-of-way would be required at the Brownsville Road intersection. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor in April 1998. The current concept revises the work to be done at the Oglesby Road intersection. The western section of Oglesby would be shifted approximately 35 m to 40 m (115 ft to 131 ft) north of the existing roadway. All other aspects of the proposed project have remained unchanged. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
