Abstract

This report presents results of Phase II Archaeological Testing of eleven aboriginal and historical sites located on the Naval Submarine Base--Kings Bay (NSB-KB), Camden County, Georgia (Figures 1.1-1.2). While construction plans for the base were altered in many instances to avoid damaging sites, site density was too high to avoid all significant sites. Federal laws and regulations require that certain impacts on archaeological and historical sites being minimized through various forms of preservation. This research was conducted to evaluate these sites within the Section 106 Compliance Process, in order to provide sufficient data to determine the site's potential eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The research presented here is part of a long-term study of a previously little known area in the Southeast and has resulted in a substantial increase in the knowledge of human lifeways here. We now have a much clearer idea of how people have lived along the coast for the past 3,600 years. While it will take years to evaluate fully all the data from this project, it will be a contribution to the history and archaeology of the peoples of the Southeast, through intense study of a single place, the Kings Bay Locality.
