Abstract

The proposed project would improve the intersections on SR 6/US 278 at Hill Road and Oglesby Road in Cobb County. Changes from the original project description include the replacement of a drainage pipe under Hill Road and a curb and gutter section would be added south of Hill Road and tie into an existing church sidewalk. These changes are both east of SR 6. Existing right-of-way east of SR 6 is 45 feet, proposed right-of-way would be 88 to 148 feet. At Oglesby Road, a trench will be excavated to a depth of 2 feet on the west side of the road within the existing shoulder. The trench will extend to Hill Road. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
