Abstract

Additional archeological survey of the proposed realignment and bridge replacement on Rocky Creek Road, using recently obtained plans showing newly required right-of-way, located one archeological site within the proposed area of potential effect. This large Archaic, Woodland, and historic period site has been designated as site 9MO548 ("Phagan Ridge'). After careful evaluation, the site portion within the project area does not contribute to the site's eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The prehistoric components there are eroded and sparse, with no evidence of remaining cultural features. Its historic component there has little value for research due to its recency and lack of distinction. Because the portion of site 9MO548 within the proposed project area does not contribute to NRHP eligibility, Southeastern Archeological Services recommends that the proposed project will have no adverse effects on significant archeological resources. Notwithstanding other considerations, we suggest that the project be allowed to proceed as planned.
