Abstract

The proposed project would construct two passing lanes, one northbound and one southbound, on State Route 81, Newton County. The proposed construction would be between Mile Post 3.4 and Mile Post 5.2 for a total of 1.8 miles. Existing right-of-way is 120 feet, an additional 5-50 feet of right-of-way would be required. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. Two archaeological sites, 9Ne(DOT)1 and 9Ne(DOT)2, were located during survey. Both sites were recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. No other archaeological sites or National Register resources were located within the projects area of potential effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
