Abstract

The proposed project would realign the intersections of S.R. 57 and Nunez Road at S.R. 26/U.S. 80 in Swainsboro. The intersection of S.R. 57 would be shifted approximately 100 feet southwest of existing location and Nunez Road would be shifted approximately 150 feet northeast of existing location. In addition, S.R. 26/U.S. 80 would be widened beginning at a point approximately 350 feet southwest of Nunez Road to a point approximately 350 feet northeast of Victoria Drive. A survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire 0.22 mile length of the project. An archaeological survey (Level 1) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of the proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project would have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
