Abstract

The proposed original project consisted of the reconstruction of the intersection of SR 400 and SR 20 in Forsyth County. This project was surveyed by GDOT archeologists and concurrence was received in 1997. Numerous construction easements have since been added to this project, which prompted this survey. Construction easements ranging in size from 15' to 105' in width and 50' to 200' in length are located at various side street intersections with SR 20. The existing right-of-way on SR 20 varies from 100' to 180' with additional right-of-way varying from 180' to 360'. The total length of this project is .51 mile. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the proposed project's APE. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
