Abstract

During March and April of 1986, Robert S. Webb conducted a reconnaissance level cultural resource survey of 2332 acres in three compartments (178, 179 and 187) of the Oconee National Forest in Greene County, Georgia. The survey was conducted for the USDA - Forest Service and will be used to expand the existing forest resource data base and facilitate compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-655; 80 STAT-915; 16 U.S.C. 470). A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed that no previously recorded cultural resources are located within the 2332-acre survey area. Surface survey and shovel testing (aided by land acquisition records and map research) revealed 52 sites and 13 isolated finds ranging from Archaic period lithics to early 20th century house sites. It is recommended that 14 sites be protected and/or investigated in more detail. Cultural clearance is recommended for the remaining sites. Wells associated with 8 historic sites should be fenced, capped or filled to reduce hazards and protect any possibly valuable cultural data they may contain.
