Abstract

The proposed projects would widen and reconstruct old Nunez Road and Meadowlake Parkway south of Swainsboro. Project MR-4300(l) would begin at the intersection of Meadowlake Parkway then would extend northerly along existing Old Nunez Road ending at the intersection of Moring Road. Additional rights-of-way would be required for Moring Road intersection improvements. The proposed project would be approximately 0.95 miles in length. Project MR-4303(l) would begin at the intersection of Old Nunez Road then would extend easterly along existing Meadowlake Parkway for a distance of 2 miles before tying into SR4 at the intersection of SR4 and Meadowlake Parkway. No additional rights-of-way would be required. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire length of the combined project corridors. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
