Abstract

The results of the survey indicate that one potentially significant prehistoric site lies in the proposed borrow area to R-2. This site will require further mitigation planning and possible excavation. The site was designated Site #2 (Borrow Area R-2) and is described in more detail in Chapter V of this report. An estimate of the initial mitigation planning needed to more fully and accurately assess the value of this site is presented in the summary and recommendations, and in Appendix D. Cultural clearance cannot therefore be advised for Borrow Area R-2 at the present time. Two other aboriginal sites were also noted in and near this borrow area and were designated Site #1 (Borrow Area R-2) and Site #2 (Borrow Area R-2).. Both of these sites represent surface scatters which have been destroyed by erosion and are recommended for clearance. The survey of the proposed railroad relocation property located two 11 prehistoric sites and an early 20th century house foundation. All three of these sites are recommended for clearance and do not appear to stain potentially significant data resources. One previously recorded site, 9EB427, is a 111 story wood frame home and has been previously nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. Although this site does not directly lie in the path of the proposed railway relocation, the site must be carefully avoided during the construction phases of the project. If these precautionary measures mentioned above can be observed, cultural clearance can be advised for the railroad relocation R-2.
