Abstract

The results of the survey indicate that no significant cultural resources exist at road crossings 1-3 and 1-4 and cultural resource clearance can be advised for both of these project areas. Two archaeological sites and one isolated find were discovered on the South Carolina side of the proposed corridor numbered 1-2. These two sites have been highly disturbed by pine planting, clear cutting and bulldozer activity and may be recommended for clearance. Site #2 lies only approximately 60.8 meters (200 feet) north of Site 38AN140, which is a prehistoric/historic site located by the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology during their archaeological survey of the Richard B. Russell Reservoir. This site is recommended for National Register Nomination by the Institute and must be carefully avoided during the construction phase of the road relocation. It is advised that all construction disturbances be kept at least 30.4 meters (100 feet) away from Site 38AN140 at all times. This will allow for a buffer to protect the Site 38AN140 and permit clearance for the actual construction corridor. If the precautions mentioned above are followed for Road Relocation 1-4 cultural clearance may be recommended for all of the three project areas covered in this report. The Earth Systems Division of SSI has enjoyed performing these professional archaeological services. for the Savannah District Corps of Engineers.
