Abstract

During February of 1986, Robert S. Webb conducted a reconnaissance level cultural resource survey of 60 acres at the Cartersville Airport in Bartow County, Georgia. A runway extension project has been proposed for this area, which lies within the Etowah Valley Historic District. Given the sensitivity of this area, the State Historic Preservation Office requested this report to familiarize officials with cultural resources in the project area and how project activities will impact these resources. The feasibility of proceeding with the project as planned may then be determined. As presented, this document is a request for technical assistance from the SHPO, not 106 compliance. A document addressing compliance will be presented after each resource's National Register eligibility status has been determined. A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed that no previously recorded cultural resources are located within the 60-acre survey area. Surface survey and shovel testing revealed a historic structural complex (Site 1), a buried, prehistoric site, at least partially intact (Site 2), and a prehistoric surface site with the potential for intact features and midden (Site 3). Three isolated finds were also discovered.
