Abstract

A cultural resource inventory and assessment was undertaken on the 15.8 acre, Recreation Area C-5 on Lake Oconee, Greene County, Georgia. The research was undertaken to investigate a previously recorded cultural property, and to determine if additional cultural resources were present. Field methods included screened shovel cutting on a 10 meter interval over the entire tract and the excavation of six 1 X 2 m units. The results indicate that the previously recorded resource, 9 Ge 164, is the only cultural property within the study tract. The prehistoric remains included a Late Archaic lithic scatter and denser Lamar cultural remains. No evidence was recovered for intact midden or cultural features, and the research potential of the resource is considered low. Cultural property 9 Ge 164 is recommended as ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and no further work is warranted.
