Abstract

Johnsontown was a low-income black community on the northside of Atlanta, which existed between 1912, when Columbus and Callie Johnson first bought property in the neighborhood, and 1982, when the creation of the Lenox Square MARTA rapid rail station necessitated its demolition. The archaeological investigations of Johnsontown attempted to recover material evidence of the community from previously vacated properties (e.g. , the school site) and from properties being vacated under MARTA ownership. The recovered artifacts have been organized into coherent categories of information which are identified and described in this report. Testing in the neighborhood did not discover any materials which justified full excavation, but the report presented here and the deposited materials constitute an important resource base for future analysis.
