Cultural Resource Survey: Leavell Land Exchange Compartments 177 and Part of 171 Oconee Ranger District

Abstract

The present report summarizes a cultural resource survey of five tracts of National Forest land (770.68 acres) scheduled for exchange with R.N. Leavell of Athens, Georgia. These tracts are located within two timber compartments on the Oconee National Forest and are accessible as follows: Tract 169, Compartment 171 - proceed south on SR 15 approximately 13 miles to L. C. Curtis and Son, Inc. sand plant (0.1 miles north of the Oconee River). Turn right (south) for 1.7 miles on an unnamed country road, then right (southwest) .4 miles on a second unnamed country road. Project area, 116.51 acres, begins on right. Tracts 94, 98, 111, Compartment 177 - these tracts are contiguous with tract 94 being on the western boundary. Tract 94 is accessible via SR 15 approximately 16 miles from Watkinsville. Turn left (north-. east) at Ashley Lake and proceed 2 miles to the first intersection. Tract 94 begins northeast of the intersection and extends due east into tracts 98 and 111. Acreages are 220, 188, and 160.26, respectively. Tract 160, Compartment 177 - proceed southwest approximately .7 miles on unnamed country road from its junction with SR 77 in Maxeys. Turn left (southeast) at the first fork; the project area begins .2 miles from this point., Of 365.3 acres in tract, only 85.9 are project.
