Abstract

Between January 28 and February 1, 1991, and again from October 24 through 28, 1991, archaeologists from Garrow & Associates, Inc. conducted field work at Robins Air Force Base (RAFB) in Houston County, Georgia. This work was associated with two items (0004 and 0005) of a larger contract between Garrow & Associates, Inc. and the United States Air Force. The objectives of the field work were to assess the current condition of previously recorded sites within the RAFB boundaries (item 0004) and to complete intensive archaeological survey of a 500 acre tract in the southern sector of the base slated for intensive development, and selected sample tracts within the undeveloped floodplain section of the base west of the Ocmulgee River (item 0005). This report contains the results of the item 0005 survey. The conditions of four previously inaccessible sites in the swamp are also reported. The field crew excavated shovel tests in four areas of the 500 acre southern tract. Surveyed areas were those not included in the previous 1987 field work at the base (Blanton and Reed 1987). No archaeological materials were recovered from the screened soil. A randomly selected 90 acre sample consisting of six 15 acre block units was also surveyed in the Horse Creek/Ocmulgee River floodplain. Shovel testing in this undeveloped area also yielded negative results. Four previously recorded sites in the swamp were revisited and found to be unmodified since their discovery in 1987.
