Abstract

Under a continuing services contract with the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted a Phase III archaeological mitigation of Site 9CEI98. The objective of this excavation was to mitigate the site before construction activities associated with the construction of a new motor pool began. This work was undertaken in compliance with Section I 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended; Executive Order 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment); and the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974. Previous investigations related to this project included Phase I survey work by SAS (Ledbetter and Spencer 1987) and GSRC (Poplin 1987). The site was revisited again by Southern Research, Inc. while conducting a Phase I survey (Elliott et al. 2001a) and the Phase II investigation of Site 9CEI98 was conducted by PCI (Carruth et al. 2010). Based on the results of the Phase III mitigation, the site represents a late eighteenth to mid-twentieth century non-Indian house site with a prehistoric artifact scatter. The site measures 70-x-40 m and lies on a ridge saddle above Dougherty and Wortley creeks. The site is located in the west-central portion of the military reservation in the extreme western portion of Training Area BB-05.
