Abstract

In summary, the western half of the Little River floodplain within the project area was tested by six deep backhoe tests spaced at 100 yard (91 meter) intervals. No cultural material or features were observed. The western edge of the floodplain on the first terrace was tested with a shallow trench 6 m. X 60 cm. X 40 cm. No cultural material or features were observed with the exception of a metal pipe of recent manufacture. Circumstances prevented testing of the eastern half of the floodplain. The results of the tests indicate that no archaeological sites exist in the western half of the floodplain, and that the presence of properties eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places within the project area is unlikely. In the opinion of the Staff Archaeologist, the cultural resources of the State will not be affected by construction of the project .
