Abstract

A cultural resources survey of portions of the proposed Madison - Union Point 115 kV transmission line was conducted in July and August, 1985, for Oglethorpe Power Corporation. Surveyed were 10.9 mi of existing transmission line, 2 mi of new right-of-way, and the Lickskillet substation site. Fifteen archeological sites or occurrences were discovered. The sites represented prehistoric and Protohistoric Indian and recent historic occupations. Three of the sites are considered eligible to the National Register of Historic Places at the local level of significance. Two of these sites have already been extensively disturbed and additional disturbance during power line construction will not constitute an additional adverse impact. Hand-clearing of vegetation on the remaining site, 9Ge(SAS)l, placement of utility poles outside the site boundaries, and immediate re-seeding should mitigate the potential impacts of construction. The remaining 12 sites are not considered eligible to the National Register of Historic Places.
