Abstract

From May 25, through May 27, 1985, Robert S. Webb, archeological consultant for Tribble & Richardson, Inc. conducted a 100 percent coverage pedestrian survey of a proposed 264 acre spray irrigation site for wastewater treatment near Ashburn in Turner County, Georgia. Since this project is federally funded (Farmers Home Administration), the survey is required by the state of Georgia to bring the city of Ashburn into compliance with federal regulations concerning cultural resource identification and protection. A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed that no previously recorded prehistoric or historic resources have been recorded within the impact zone. Intensive surface survey and subsurface shovel testing revealed three Archaic Period surface/plow zone scatters and 12 isolated finds. The sites were determined to have been heavily disturbed by extensive agricultural activity and retain little significant, recoverable archeological data. Based on these findings, full clearance is recommended for the 264 acre project area.
