Abstract

During September of 1985, Robert S. Webb conducted a reconnaissance level cultural resource survey of 2149 acres in two compartments (146 and 147) of the Oconee National Forest in Putnam and Jasper Counties, Georgia. The survey was conducted for the USDA - Forest Service and will be used to expand the existing forest resource data base and facilitate compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-655; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470). A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed that no previously recorded cultural resources are located within the 2149-acre survey area. Surface survey and shovel testing (aided by land acquisition records and map research) revealed 36 sites and 10 isolated finds ranging from Archaic period lithics to early 20th century house sites. It is recommended that a mound (Site GA08S249), two stone pile sites (Sites GA08S216 and GA08S250) and 2 historic house sites (Sites GA08S217 and GA08S235) be protected and investigated in more detail. Cultural clearance is recommended for the remaining sites. Wells associated with ten historic sites should be fenced, capped or filled to reduce hazards and protect any possibly valuable cultural data they may contain.
