Abstract

Oglethorpe Power Corporation is in the process of examining several alternative locations for a pumped-storage hydroelectric facility. one alternative location is in the Chattahoochee National Forest along Mill Creek in northeastern Murray County, Georgia, about 15 km northeast of Chatsworth. This report details the methods, results, and recommendations of an archeological reconnaissance survey conducted in September, 1985. The goal of the report is to provide a baseline set of data concerning the magnitude of the archeological record at the proposed project area. The information in this report should allow engineers, planners, and cultural resource managers to judge potential impact upon archeological sites if the Grassy Mountain alternative is selected for construction. Twenty-three archeological sites are described and evaluated for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. They range in age from Late Archaic to historic twentieth century and include probable Woodland and Mississippian components. Eighteen sites will need further archeological investigation to determine if they meet the eligibility criteria of the National Register of Historic Places. Five sites were lacking in significance and deemed unworthy for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
