Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey at the proposed Woodland Park Development Site in Newton County, Georgia, was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the 1 70-acre (52-hectare [ha]) project area, and to assess the significance of each resource. The project area is located 1.7 kilometers (km) southeast of Covington on the south side of Highway 278 and along the west side of the Alcovy River floodplain. Eighteen cultural resources (Sites 9NE210-9NE223 and Isolated Finds 1-4) were recorded during this study. Five resources (Sites 9NE210, 9NE217, 9NE218, 9NE220, and 9NE221) were recommended potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The remaining 13 cultural resources are recommended NRHP-ineligible. Phase II testing was conducted at the five prehistoric sites recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP during the Phase I survey. Following testing, Sites 9NE210, 9NE217, 9NE218, and 9NE220 are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Site 9NE221 is recommended eligible for the NRHP.
