Abstract

During the months of August and September 2002, New South Associates conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed 711-acre Seven Hills development tract in northeast Paulding County, Georgia. A total of 26 sites and 12 isolated finds were recorded as a result of this investigation. Site types include late nineteenth and early/mid twentieth-century homestead sites, prehistoric and historic artifact scatters, and isolated finds. Eight prehistoric archaeological sites (9PA166, 9PA168, 9PA169, 9PA174, 9PA175, 9PA178, 9PA179, and 9PA185) were recommended as potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as they contained sufficient integrity, clarity, context, density, and/or diversity to warrant further site evaluation. Phase II testing was undertaken at seven of the eight sites (9PA 166, 9PA 168, 9PA 169, 9PA 175, 9PA 178, 9PA 179, and 9PA 185)considered potentially eligible between June and September 2003. Based on these investigations, four sites 9PA 168,9PA 175, 9PA 178, and 9PA 179 are tentatively recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. This report details the background, methods, and results of this project, as well as management recommendations for all cultural resources recorded during these investigations.
