Phase I Cultural Resources Survey and Archaeological Testing Proposed Governors Club Development Site Cobb and Paulding Counties, Georgia

A Phase I cultural resources survey and Phase II evaluative testing of the proposed Governors Club Development Site in Cobb and Paulding Counties, Georgia was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area, and to assess the significance of each resource. The project area cover approximately 279 hectares (690 acres) and is located along an unnamed tributary of Pumpkinvine Creek, 5.0 kilometers west of the City of Acworth. A total of 36 archeological sites and 13 isolated finds were recorded. Thirty-five of the sites and all 13 isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Four sites (9C0579, 9C0581, 9PA142, 9PA149) were tested, and considered ineligible for the NRHP as a result. One prehistoric site (9C0586) is considered potentially eligible for the NRHP. This site will not be effected by the current undertaking, and can be preserved in place. As a result of survey and testing efforts, prehistoric occupations from the Early Archaic, Late Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods were identified. Historic occupations ranged from the late 19th to late 20th centuries. One standing historic structure was identified outside the project's boundaries, but within the project's area of potential effects. Structure Cobb- I is recommended eligible for the NRHP for architecture and history. Based on the viewshed assessment, there will be no adverse effect to this historic resource from the development of the Governor's Club Site.
