Abstract

In June 2008, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted a cultural resources survey of the 25.7 acre Stafford Development Tract in Tift County, Georgia. This work was performed for Sligh Environmental Consultants, of Savannah, Georgia, under contract to Stafford Development of Tifton, Georgia. The cultural resources survey was conducted in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations concerning the management of cultural resources as administered by the Regulatory Program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These laws and regulations include: Section 404 of the Clean Water Act of 1948 [33 USC 1344], as amended; Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 [16 USC 470], as amended; 36 CFR 320-330, inclusive; and 36 CFR 800: Protection of Historic Properties. The cultural resources survey of the Stafford Development Tract included background research, architectural survey, and archaeological survey. Investigators identified four structures during the architectural survey. House 1, constructed around 1940, was recommended ineligible for listing on the NRHP due to partial destruction by fire and general deterioration. House 2 and two associated outbuildings, also constructed around 1940, were recommended ineligible for listing on the NRHP due to lack of integrity caused by general deterioration. The archaeological survey recorded one isolated find (Isolate 1) within the Stafford Development Tract. The isolated find, consisting of two Coastal Plain chert flakes, was considered ineligible for listing on the NRHP. Further management of the Stafford Development Tract with regard to cultural resources is not warranted. Proposed land-disturbing activities in the Stafford Development Tract will not affect any historic properties and should be allowed to proceed without further management consideration.
