Abstract

In October 2010, Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. (hereafter, Southern Research), conducted an intensive Phase I archaeological survey of realignment segments for the Proposed SR 133 widening project between Moultrie and Albany in Dougherty, Worth, and Colquitt Counties, Georgia (Figure 1). The current investigation by Southern Research is an addendum to a previous cultural resources survey of the SR 133 widening project conducted in 2006 by Terracon, Inc (Koch et al. 2006). Archaeological survey of the proposed realignment segments resulted in the identification of seven archaeological sites (9DU197, 9DU198, 9CQ74 through 9CQ78) and four isolated finds (Isolates 1 through 4). All of the cultural resources identified during the current investigation were evaluated for eligibility for listing on the NRHP. We recommend archaeological sites 9CQ74 and 9CQ78, and the four isolated finds not eligible for the NRHP. It should be noted that five archaeological sites (9DU197, 9DU198, 9CQ75, 9CQ76, and 9CQ77) could not be fully evaluated for inclusion on the NRHP because they extend outside of the current project area boundaries. We did not have GDOT or landowner permission to conduct investigations outside of the current APE. However, it is our opinion that the portions of these archaeological sites located within the current APE do not contribute to the NRHP eligibility of these sites. Thus, the proposed realignment segments will not have a negative effect on any archaeological resources. We recommend that the project be allowed to proceed as planned without further management consideration to archaeological resources. All artifacts, notes, and this report will be curated at the Antonio J. Waring Laboratory of Archaeology, University of West Georgia at Carrolton.
