Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted of a proposed transmission line and substation in western Cobb County, Georgia. The literature review conducted prior to the field survey indicated that the substation was very near the Battle of Gilgal Church, fought on June 15th and 16th, 1864, and that Confederate earthworks constructed between June 5th and 14th, 1864, would probably be encountered. The field survey confirmed that preserved segments of Confederate earthworks do exist along the transmission line and on the substation tract. Also, two prehistoric lithic scatters, a house site, and two rock pile sites were recorded. The evaluation determined that only the Confederate earthworks are eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Because the earthworks will be impacted by the proposed construction, a program of archeological data recovery is recommended to mitigate the loss of the significant information the trenches hold.
