Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a Habersham County commercial development proposed by Hayes Chevrolet. The development would necessitate improvements to a sewer system and addition of a deceleration lane. It would center on a new auto dealership facility, and would allow for the creation of new permanent full-time equivalent jobs. At the request of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Historic Preservation Division (HPD), the area to be developed (about 27 acres) was investigated for archeological sites. Intensive archeological survey found no historic period and few prehistoric artifacts in the project area, most of which has been disturbed by erosion, clearing, and mechanical disturbances for agriculture, residential use, and roadways. One archeological site was found. Site 9HM215 is a sparse scatter of chipped quartz on a ridge nose over a drainage head. The site's deposits are shallow, non diagnostic, and show little possibility of preserved cultural features. Our observations lead us to conclude that the surveyed area contains no significant archeological sites. As a result of these conclusions, we recommend that no significant archeological resources exist within the surveyed area. Regarding such resources, we suggest the project be allowed to proceed within the surveyed area as planned.
