Abstract

From 5 to 9 December 2005, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the Morgan Lakes tract in Chatham County, Georgia. The survey tract consisted of approximately 293 acres. Out of the total acreage, only 170 acres consisted of uplands. The remaining 123 acres consisted of a 30 acre borrow pit and 92 acres of wetland (both jurisdictional and non-jurisdictional). This investigation was carried out for Thomas and Hutton Engineering, Inc. during the residential development of the project tract. Figures 1 and 2 show the location of the project tract.

Cultural resources survey consisted of background archival research (to locate previously identified archaeological and architectural resources and to assess the potential for new discoveries), field survey, curation, and report production. This survey was completed in compliance with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, and by criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended) and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, by personnel qualified under the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards (36 CFR Part 61).

The results of background research and cultural resources field survey are discussed in this report. Chapter 2 discusses the methods of investigation. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the environmental and cultural background of the project area, and Chapter 4 presents the results of the investigation and recommendations.
