Abstract

Lake Blackshear is located on the Flint River along the county lines of Worth, Crisp, Lee, Sumter, and Dooley Counties, Georgia. This hydroelectric project was built in 1930 and is operated by the Crisp County Power Commission. Lake Blackshear inundates approximately 8,700 acres.

The 1994 flood damaged and breached approximately 700 feet of the levee north of the Lake Blackshear dam. Flood waters also entered the power house, but the dam structure was unharmed.

In 1973-1974, a limited archaeological survey was conducted by the Columbus Museum (Schnell n.d.) of portions of the lake’s bottom exposed when it was lowered for general maintenance purposes. Over 200 archaeological sites were located by this survey.

No archaeological sites were located in the area damaged by floodwaters in 1994
