Abstract

The project proposes to construct the Butler Bypass on new location south of Butler. The project would begin at SR 96 approximately 0.7 mile west of the SR 96 and CR 64 intersection west of Butler and extend southeast, east, and then northeast, ending approximately one mile east of the SR 96 and CR 246 intersection east of Butler. The total project length would be 5.7 miles; proposed right-of-way would be 250 feet. An archaeological survey of the proposed corridor was conducted for the entire length of the project. An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted for the revised alignment in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
