Archaeological Assessment of Projects IR-75-2(157), FR-163-1(10), FR-163(11), RS-1583(9), Henry County

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects IR-75-2(157), FR-163-1(10}, FR-163-1(11), RS-1583(9), Henry County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. Project IR-75-2(157) proposes the widening of the bridges and approaches over I-75 on S.R. 20. A corridor 250 feet wide was surveyed for .5 mile. Project FR-163-1(10) proposes to widen S.R. 20 from I-75 to a point just east of where the project crosses the Southern Rail way. The project calls for a partial relocation of the existing facility, to the north. A corridor 250 feet wide was surveyed for 2.2 miles. Project FR-163-1 ( 11) proposes the construction of an extension of the relocated facility proposed in FR-163-1(10), on new location, from a point east of the Southern Rail way to Covington Road, in a corridor 250 feet wide, for a distance of 1.2 miles. Project RS-1583(9) proposes the construction of a new connector road beginning at Covington Road and ending at Keys Ferry Road. The project is to be on new location in a corridor 250 feet wide, for a distance of .5 mile. An archaeologica1 survey ( Leve1 I) was conducted within the project corridors in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
