Abstract

Project STPN-164-1(49) would widen and reconstruct the SR 138 and CR 665/Millers Mill Road intersection to provide turn lanes in Henry County. The proposed project would consist of the following construction: a west bound turn lane would be constructed on SR 138 to CR 665/Millers Mill Road; a right turn lane would be constructed on CR 665/Millers Mill Road to SR 138; and CR 665/Millers Mill Road would be realigned to provide improved sight distance for the west bound tum lane on SR 138. The existing right-of-way on SR 138 and CR 665/Millers Mill Road is approximately 80 feet. The additional required right-of-way needed for project construction on SR 138 is 33 feet, while minor amounts of required right-of-way will be utilized on CR 665/Millers Mill Road for miter construction. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
