Abstract

We have reviewed the "Anticipated Construction Guidelines Within the Historically Significant Areas of Georgia Mountain Resort Golf Course" dated October 31, 1988 and prepared by Denis Griffiths and Associates, Inc. Assuming these construction plans are accepted by the Department of Natural Resources, we have computed anticipated costs to mitigate adverse impacts upon the archaeological sites to be affected. These anticipated costs have been calculated through extrapolation of site sizes and subsurface characteristics as determined by Phase II archaeological testing conducted by Archaeological Research Services of West Georgia College (report in preparation), and through comparison with the costs of archaeological mitigation as these costs have been determined by the National Park Service (Carnes et al. 1986). It should be stressed that the cost estimates are in 1984 dollars, and that individual contractor bids may vary widely from the figures provided here. These projected cost estimates constitute the best effort by this office to provide a basis for funding planning and should not be regarded as more than estimates. Given the fact that relatively little time appears available to conduct the archaeological work, cost estimates at the higher end of the scale given by the National Park Service were used.
