Abstract

This report presents the results, conclusions and recommendations from a one-day archeological reconnaissance survey of a thirteen-acre tract of land that is being considered for mining by the Thiele Kaolin Company. The tract is in potential wetlands of the Oconee River floodplain and is thus subject to federal review and compliance. This survey was commissioned by Thiele well in advance of the formal compliance-related permitting process. The purpose of the survey is to give Thiele a professional assessment of the likelihood of significant archeological sites existing within the tract. This is not an intensive cultural resources survey meant to satisfy Section 404 requirements.
