Abstract

Project MLP-3 (226) would widen US 41 / SR 3 / North Wall Street in Calhoun, Georgia. The proposed project would begin on US 41 / SR 3 approximately 91.4 meters (300 feet) south of the Line Street/ US 41 / SR 3 intersection then continue northerly to an ending point approximately 152.4 meters (500 feet) north of the SR 156 / US 41 / SR 3 intersection. The existing right-of-way on US 41 / SR 3 is approximately 12.1 meters (40 feet), while the additional required right-of-way will be a maximum of approximately 28 meters ( 92 feet). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 1.1 kilometer (0.7 mile) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT / FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type / scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.".
