Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) intends to widen Jeffersonville and Millerfield roads near the crossroads community of Cross Keys in Bibb County (Project Nos. STP00-3223-00(004 )/BRMLB-3223-00(006), STP00-3223-00(002), STP00-3223-00(005), and STP00-0000-00(835), PI Nos. 351090/351095, 342080, 351080, and 0000835). The project area lies west of Macon in Bibb County and includes a roughly 2.28-mile segment of existing Jeffersonville Road from the western intersection with Emery Highway/U.S. Highway 80 east to the intersection of Jeffersonville Road and Emery Highway/U.S. Highway 80. Where Jeffersonville Road turns east, the area of potential effect (APE) continues slightly south on Ocmulgee East Boulevard/Georgia 87 Connector to the intersection with Emery Highway (U.S. Hwy 80)/Riggins Mill Road. Millerfield Road will be widened from Jeffersonville Road north to 500 feet north of Bristol Drive. In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (36 CFR 800), New South Associates, Inc. conducted a supplemental Phase I Archaeological Survey of new required right-of-way (ROW) added to the project since the initial surveys in 1996 and 1998. The APE included small segments of new ROW along Jeffersonville and Millerfield roads. GDOT waived the 30-meter ( 100 ft.) expanded survey corridor (ESC), normally required in the Environmental Procedures Manual, as the project plans are unlikely to change. This addendum report describes the results of this archaeological survey and provides National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations.
