Abstract

A cultural overview was developed the proposed Eisenhower Parkway Extension project. Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted this work for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Office of Environment and Location under a subcontract with HDR Engineering, Inc. (HDR). The Area of Potential Effect (APE) for this study is defined as approximately 255 square miles around the City of Macon. For planning purposes, the APE includes all of the Macon West, Macon East, Warner Robins Northwest, and Warner Robins Northeast U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 minute quadrangle maps. The cultural overview provides highway planners with the locations of previously identified cultural resources, outlines historic contexts in which to evaluate specific resources, and presents areas of high archeological potential. The report also presents revised boundaries of a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) which has been defined within the APE by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in consultation with the Native American tribes. The GDOT and project planners utilized this information during their selection of feasible highway alternatives.
