Abstract

From 22-30 April and 12-14 May 2003, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive Phase I archaeological resources survey of the proposed 100 acre Achord Road substation tract and corresponding 4.8 km (3.0 mi) Achord Road-Firetower Road 115 kV transmission line corridor in Laurens County, Georgia. This survey consisted of background research and intensive archaeological field survey, and was conducted in con1pliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 (as amended through 1992). Background research was conducted at the Historic Preservation Division, Department of Natural Resources in Atlanta, as well as the State Archaeological Site Files in Athens. This research revealed no previously recorded archaeological resources within 0.8 km (0.5 mi) of the project area. Archaeological field survey methods included systematic shovel testing at 30 meter (98 ft) intervals along 37 transects within the substation tract, as well as two transects within the proposed transmission line corridor. Approximately 4.0 km (2.5 mi) of the corridor follows Valambrosia/Honeysuckle Road, and two transects were placed within the 15 meter (50 ft) corridor. The remaining 0.8 km (0.5 mi) consists of two proposed lines approximately 25 meters (82 ft) apart, which run from the existing Dublin-Eastman 230 kV transn1ission line to the western corner of the substation tract. A transect was placed on each proposed line in this section. Shovel tests were excavated until sterile subsoil was reached. Visual inspection augmented shovel testing in areas with good ground surface visibility. Two cemeteries located along the proposed transmission line corridor were observed and delineated. Their boundaries were determined in relation to the corridor. Brockington and Associates, Inc., recovered one isolated find (Isolate 1 ), a chert projectile point tip, in a plowed field within the substation tract. This isolated find is recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) due to its location and lack of integrity. Archaeological resources clearance for the proposed Achord Road substation and Achord Road-Firetower Road 115 kV transn1ission line is recommended.
