Abstract

Background R. S. Webb & Associates conducted a cultural resources survey at two tracts which comprise the proposed Cross-Dock Development Site in Fulton County, Georgia on February 23 and 24, 1999. These studies were conducted on behalf of Rochester & Associates to locate and identify cultural resourc~s within the project area and assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36 CFR Part 60.4). The project area consists of two tracts, one of which covers approximately 14.2 hectares (35.0 acres) and a smaller tract covering approximately 1.2 hectares (3.0 acres). The project area is located in south Fulton County, Georgia approximately 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles) northwest of Ben Hill and approximately 3.6 kilometers (2.3 miles) northwest of the Atlanta City limits. The cultural resources survey included a literature review and an intensive field survey. The literature review was conducted between December 10 and 15, 1998 and the archeological survey was conducted on February 23 and 24, 1999. During the literature review, state and county records, maps and documents were examined to determine if previously recorded archeological sites/historic structures are .located within or around the project area. Using surface and subsurface techniques, the field survey was conducted to identify and record cultural resources within the study area. Results Literature Review: The literature review revealed that no state recorded archeological resources are, recorded within the project tract. Five sites are located within the project vicinity (within 1,500 meters) to the west along the Chattahoochee River. A review of the Fulton County historic structures files shows that there are no state-recognized or NRHP-eligible historic structures within the study tract. Historic map review revealed no evidence of historic structures within either the north or the south project tract. Three historic structures were located in the vicinity (within 610 meters) of the south project tract and four were located in the vicinity of the north project tract. Archeological Field Survey: During the field survey, three archeological sites (9FU346, 9FU34 7, and 9FU348) and two isolated finds (IF-1 and IF-2) were located within the south tract (Table I). Site types recorded include prehistoric lithic scatters (n=2) and a prehistoric lithic and ceramic scatter (n= 1). One site (9FU347) contained residual ceramics, which suggest a Woodland period affiliation. No archeological sites or isolated finds were recorded during the survey of the north tract. Based on the survey data, Sites 9FU346, 9FU347, and 9FU348, as well as the isolated finds (IF-1 and IF-2) were recommended as ineligible for the NRHP.
