Abstract

This cultural resources investigation sought to identify archaeological sites present along a number of proposed links for the Eisenhower Parkway Freeway Extension. This archaeological survey resulted in the identification of seven previously unrecorded archaeological sites and three isolated finds. Each site was tested for integrity and research potential, but none were found to meet National Register of Historic Places eligibility criteria. Attempts were made to relocate three previously recorded archaeological sites that various links pass through. These efforts confirmed that one of these sites (9BI32) has been destroyed and that a second (9BI37, Camp Wheeler) is potentially eligible/eligible for the NRHP. The third site, 9BI3 (Swift Creek Mounds), was not encountered in the vicinity of the nearest link and was reportedly destroyed. Attempts were also made to relocated previously recorded archaeological sites in close proximity to link routes. Additional investigations to determine its archaeological potential are recommended at Camp Wheeler, if Links J and/or K are chosen for construction. Should Link E be chosen, further attempts to relocate site 9BI5 should be made, ideally during a dry spell when the area isn't flooded. No additional cultural resources investigations are recommended along the other proposed links.
