Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of 15 intersections surrounding the City of Dalton in response to a request by HNTB Corporation. The Georgia Department of Transportation is in the planning stages of proposed intersection upgrades in Whitfield County. Background research at the Georgia State Archaeological Site files indicated that there are 11 previously recorded archeological sites within one kilometer of the 15 intersections involved with this project. None of these sites are located in the project area. No previously recorded sites were revisited during the current survey. During the current survey, one new archaeological site (9WD157) was identified. Site 9WD157 is a small cemetery located at Intersection 1 and is owned by the Mt. Vernon United Baptist Church. The cemetery has six graves in four family plots. Though recommended as not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP, the cemetery should be avoided. If ground breaking is to occur during intersection improvements here, it is recommended that an archaeologist be present to monitor for the presence of previously undetected burials.
