Abstract

A cultural resources reconnaissance- level survey of 1004 ha (2480 ac) in the Oconee National Forest, Greene and Oglethorpe Counties, Georgia, was conducted for the National Forest Service. Sixty-eight sites and 20 artifact occurrences were recorded. The sites consist of 42 prehistoric sites, 17 historic house sites, 3 other historic sites and 6 historic and prehistoric sites. Thirty-one sites have potential to be eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. It is recommended that these sites be protected until their eligibility can be determined by more testing. Thirty-seven sites are not eligible because heavy disturbance and paucity of cultural remains severely limits their research potential.
