Abstract

R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a cultural resources survey of the proposed Kingswood South development site in Fulton County, Georgia from April 29 through May 2, 1996. The survey was conducted on behalf of Law Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places criteria [36 CFR Part 60.4(d)]. The project area covers approximately 34 hectares (83 acres) and is located in Fulton County, southwest of the Mansell Road-Georgia Highway 400 interchange. The survey included a literature/records search and an archeological field survey of the project area. A review of pertinent National Register files and historic structures files revealed that no National Register-listed resources or previously recorded historic structures are located within the project area. Historic maps show no 19th or early 20th century structures within the study tract; however, the 1956 USGS Roswell, Georgia quadrangle map and aerial photographs dating to 1938 and 1950 show one structural complex along the western edge of the project area. Review of compliance reports at the State Historic Preservation Office indicated that a cultural resources survey was conducted for the Liberty Square development just south of the project area (Smith 1979). One multi-component prehistoric site (Site 9FU144) was recorded. Woodland and Paleoindian components were recognized. At the State Archeological Site Files, a recorded site (Site 9FU163) was identified as being located just east of the Kingswood South development site. Other than its general location, the site form for Site 9FU163 contains no information. Three cultural resource sites were detected during the field survey of the Kingswood South development site. The sites include a small Middle to Late Woodland lithic scatter (Site 9FU260), one early to middle 20th century farm bridge (Site 9FU259) and one early to middle 20th century house site (Site 9FU261). Due to severe disturbances, Sites 9FU259, 9FU260 and 9FU261 are unlikely to· produce significant archeological data and they are recommended as ineligible for the NRHP. No further work is warranted for these three sites or the Kingswood South development site.
